A myriad of state and federal regulations exist that pertain to the facility demolition process, regardless of the facilities’ age or its historical uses. Asbestos regulations place the burden of assuring a thorough pre-demolition asbestos inspection is conducted squarely on the shoulders of the facility owner or operator. In addition to asbestos containing materials, various building components such as lead painted materials, refrigerants in cooling systems, mercury containing switches, PCB containing devices, hydraulic oils, and other hazardous materials that may have accumulated in facilities over time, must be identified prior to demolition and properly managed to comply with regulatory requirements.
