X-ray Fluorescence Services
X-Ray Fluorescence Services
Sigma’s capabilities include an X-ray Fluorescence Analyzer (XRF) that our trained and certified technicians use to detect minute levels of lead and other metals in paint on walls and other surfaces throughout your facility. The XRF completes the analysis in a matter of minutes, saving the cost and time of shipping samples to a lab and waiting for results.
XRF Uses and Benefits
For facility operators, property owners, builders, developers and lenders, lead paint and other hazardous chemical compounds can present complex and costly management issues. Many times, remediation services go above and beyond what is necessary through the unnecessary removal or land filling of uncontaminated sources, simply because testing the materials is time consuming and costly.
XRF can be used to analyze a variety of masonry products like concrete block or painted brick, and for soil sampling on job sites to aid cleanup activities. It is also effective in determining whether concrete meets minimum lead level standards for reuse as crushed aggregate. The DNR accepts data from XRF to verify that concrete aggregate meets those requirements.
XRF Theory
XRF is a nondestructive method for the elemental analysis of solids and liquids. The sample is irradiated by an intense x-ray beam, which causes the emission of fluorescent x-rays. The emitted x-rays are detected using a wavelength dispersive detector. The wavelengths of the emitted x-rays are used to identify the elements present in the sample while the concentrations (how much) of the elements are determined by the intensity of the x-rays. Aside from lead content, Sigma’s XRF can detect a wide range of metals including mercury, cadmium, arsenic, silver and more.
